While doing the research for this post on drug abuse statistics, the one unfortunate trend I continued to encounter was an increase in the number of people who have turned to drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with the current economic climate. Yet, ironically, in the midst of an economic pinch people are still finding the money to buy the drugs and alcohol they are using to escape and/or forget about their problems.
According to DopeStats.com, people are spending anywhere from $4.50 to $60.00 depending on their drug of choice based on total volume, most of which are listed in grams. The site is even equipped with a search feature that allows people to research current pricing on just about anything.
Reporting on drug abuse statistics is one way to raise awareness but it’s hard to believe that in this day and age that awareness isn’t already at an all time high. With the increase in teenage drug use over the last couple of decades, television shows like Intervention and other anti-drug campaigns, drug abuse and alcoholism have hit home in a big way. In fact, while searching for numbers it was more common to find descriptions of COMMUNITIES and cities affected by drug and alcohol addiction as it appears the number of individuals impacted by this condition is just to vast to measure.
One of the sites I found stated that drug abuse costs the United States more that $484 billion annually… those were drug abuse statistics from the year 2000.
So what’s the solution? What can be done to turn these drug abuse statistics around and decrease the numbers? I believe that addiction, or any other negative condition we face in life, starts with you and me, regardless of whether or not we’ve ever been impacted by drug abuse in our own lives or the lives of a loved one.
The only way we will ever bring peace back into an world that is severely lacking in peace to find find peace within ourselves. Finding peace within ourselves is the greatest gift we can give to our local communities. It’s taking the initiative to come to the realization that we are something more than just a body and a mind. It’s making a conscious effort to eliminate fear from our lives and living in a place of peace that offers forgiveness instead of resistance.
Whether we are talking about drug abuse statistics or statistics in any other negative light (i.e. violence, hatred, racism) the solution starts with the individual and then spreads through our actions. It’s making a conscious decision to be the person who is going to live outside of societies norm and do what others are not willing to do. It requires shutting down our ego’s and putting others before ourselves.
If we are going to create statistics, let’s create statistics that emanate from a place of creativity and love, not ego and competition. It may mean the difference between the life and death of a friend, family member or co-worker in need on the one person who is willing to stand by them on the road to recovery.
